Collection: Parakeets & Parrots

Parakeets

Haith's recognise that Domesticated Parakeets may have their own small differences in dietary preferences due to the differences in their origin and size, but in general, their nutritional requirements are all very similar.

Haith's Parakeet Mix has been developed in association with long-established parakeet breeders to satisfy the demands of this group that can be very active in their preferred aviary conditions. Consisting of Yellow and Pearl White Millets along with Canadian Canary, Sunflower and Oats products it is lower in fats but higher in carbohydrates than Haith's Cockatiel Mix.

Parakeets also enjoy Millet Sprays and when suspended from the roof of the aviary will provide hours of interest and foraging activity, particularly for the smaller species like the Australian Parakeets. Greenfood and fruit such as apples are also taken by some species but should always be fresh and removed at the slightest sign of deterioration. An occasional supplement of Haith's parrot-like Tonic Seed can also be beneficial, providing vitamins and minerals, which may be lacking in other mixes. In a breeding situation, Haith's Condition and Rearing Food should be fed from just before the breeding season and until the young are fully-fledged. Egg Biscuit Food or Nectarblend along with Prosecto Insectivorous Mix should also be available throughout the breeding season.

Always offer Fine Oystershell Grit, Granulated Charcoal to aid the digestive process and Small Cuttlefish Bone to supply essential calcium. Other minerals may be made available from Haith's Mineralised Tonic Grit.

Parrots

Traditionally, parrots have been fed almost entirely on Sunflower Seeds and although many pet birds have survived for generations on just that they are no different to any other birds and require variety to ensure that they stay in good health and thrive.

Parrots are found in most tropical regions of the world from the Amazon Parrots of South America and the Poicephalus Parrots from Africa to the many races of Eclectus Parrots in Indonesia. Most require a similar basic diet of seeds with the addition of nuts plus some greenfood and fruit.

Haith's produce several mixes developed to ensure adequate basic nutrition for most of this group providing supplementary items like fruit, livefood and insectivorous mixes are offered to satisfy the special needs of certain individual species.

Some parrots have highly selective feeding habits and have a tendency to take what they fancy, frequently rejecting beneficial items. It can therefore be advantageous to offer a basic parrot mix such as Haith's Parrot Food that provides a well-balanced diet and supplement it with other items like Parrot Nature Diet and Parrot Fruit and Nut to give greater variety. An occasional supplement of Haith's parrot-like Tonic Seed can also be beneficial, providing vitamins and minerals, which may be lacking in other mixes.

For most parrots, however, Haith's Sun Lo Parrot Food cannot be bettered. It is made up of just 25% of the very best large USA sunflower seed; the remainder being 16 other premium quality ingredients, including a variety of dried fruits, large nuts and even diced carrot. It is a remarkable mix providing a much healthier alternative to the enormous quantity of sunflowers contained in many mixes that are frequently deficient in various amino acids and calcium.

In addition to any of the above diets, fresh greenfood should always be available along with Oystershell Grit, Granulated Charcoal and Cuttlefish Bone. Other minerals may be made available from Haith's Mineralised Tonic Grit.
