Haith’s Team Visits Chris Snell's Aviary

Yesterday the Haith's Team went on a trip to Champion Budgie Breeder, Chris Snell's aviary. Chris was kind enough to initiate a visit to help the team understand the behind-the-scenes of running a large aviary, including feeding, breeding and maintaining a hygienic space.

Chris welcomed the team and showcased upwards of 300 budgies under his care. The team excitedly took in the purpose-built aviary. Rows of neat nest boxes and large flying spaces reflected Chris's care for the wellbeing of his budgies. As we entered the building, Chris was sweeping up - the space was incredibly clean.

He passionately explained the colour variations of the budgies and talked us through the breeding process and how he selects those with certain traits to ensure the most success in their breeding. We were lucky enough to see a budgie that had been born only a few hours earlier! Chris's face lit up as he opened the nest box and allowed us to fawn over the tiny bird. It was truly amazing.

The team also learnt that Chris uses fresh water from a well which is situated in a neighbour's garden.

We also stepped outside and viewed the birds in their outside aviaries. Chris has two flights, one on each side of the entrance to his aviary area. The budgies can gain access to the outside aviaries from their inside home.  A truly remarkable set up, which ensures the budgies have access to fresh air and exercise on a daily basis. In one of these outside aviaries we where introduced to '007' - one of Chris's new youngsters which he has high hopes for.

It was educating to see how many different colours and types of budgie that live in complete harmony alongside each other, with some individual birds showing lively personalities.

As our visit came to an end we were treated to refreshing hot drinks and biscuits by Chris and his lovely wife, Anita.

Our admin and purchasing team had a lovely couple of hours spending time with Chris and learning all about the many years of hard work it has taken Chris to become the judge and champion breeder he is today. Long may it continue Chris, and we thank you for your hospitality.
