Collection: Bird Food for Cockatiels

Cockatiels originate from Australia and can be treated exactly the same as other Australian Parakeets in their feeding and general management.

However, many breeders swear by a slightly different diet as provided by Haith's Cockatiel Mix. This mix contains Canadian Canary Seed, Pearl White and Panicum Millet, Safflower Seed and best Sunflower to give a diet, which is higher in fats than Haith's Parakeet Mix. Small and occasional supplements of groats and hemp all help to provide variety, but don't overdo them, as they will only encourage cage birds to become fat and unhealthy. Some cockatiels also enjoy the occasional slice of fruit particularly apple. Millet Sprays are a very useful supplementary feed, providing a source of interest, relieving boredom and allowing natural foraging behaviour.

In a breeding situation, Haith's Condition and Rearing Food should be fed from just before the breeding season and until the young are fully fledged. Egg Biscuit Food or Nectarblend along with Prosecto Insectivorous Mix should also be available throughout the breeding season.

After existing as cage and aviary birds in Europe for over 150 years they, not only have become very popular exhibition birds in their many colour mutations, they also make adorable pets. When kept in a large cage in the home, Haith's Cockatiel Mix provides a very suitable diet but try giving a little more variety with supplements of Prosecto Insectivorous mix and Parrot-Like Tonic Seed. Always offer Fine Oystershell Grit and Granulated Charcoal to aid the digestive process and Small Cuttlefish Bone to supply essential calcium. Other minerals may be made available from Haith's Mineralised Tonic Grit.
