Males sing to proclaim their territory –announcing to other males that “this is my patch” – and also to attract a mate.
Exactly what vocal quality it is that persuades a female to give herself to a particular male, I am not sure that even scientists know, though no doubt they have theories. Could it be the volume of the song? Or the beauty of the melodies? Or the variety of the phrases? Or the stamina of the singer? Or is it the way he dances?!
