A Royal Touch: Martin's Journey To Become a Gardening Expert

From a young age, Martin has been captivated by landscapes, gardens, plants, and trees, leading him to pursue a career in horticulture. Inspired by his school’s motto, “Aim High,” he secured an apprenticeship at the Royal Gardens at Sandringham. Over three years, he honed his skills in the greenhouse complex, working on plant propagation and cultivation. He also contributed to the maintenance of the sixty-acre Edwardian Pleasure Gardens, a private estate of Her Majesty the Queen, visited by thousands annually.

Martin furthered his expertise by earning the Royal Horticultural Society Advanced Certificate in Horticulture. In 1997, he became Head Gardener at Sandringham, a role he held until April 2022. His responsibilities included managing almost one hundred acres of garden and parkland, a seventeen-acre Walled Garden, and three royal residences. His contributions earned him numerous awards, notably The Royal Victoria Medal and membership in the Victorian Order.

After a six-month European sabbatical exploring gardens and parks, Martin returned to Sandringham as a part-time Project Manager. With over 40 years in horticulture, he possesses extensive knowledge of garden sustainability, plant selection, and maintenance. Inspired by King Charles III's environmental passion, he has implemented sustainable, organic maintenance methods. In 2022, Martin launched a freelance consultancy service, advising clients across the UK.

Recently Martin has helped develop our new gardens here in Louth.  From being the leftovers of a building site, our outside space has emerged into a wildlife friendly area which benefits both our team and customers alike.
