Crafting a Pumpkin Seed Bird Feeder

As autumn comes around and pumpkins become a seasonal staple, why not re-cycle one into a delightful bird feeder?

Creating a bird feeder from a pumpkin is a fun and eco-friendly project that attracts garden birds while celebrating the Halloween season.

What You’ll Need:

- A medium-sized pumpkin

- A sharp knife (adult supervision maybe required)

- A spoon

- Twine or sturdy string

- Birdseed (sunflower seeds, millet, or a seed mix)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Pumpkin: Start by cutting the top off the pumpkin, creating a lid. Use a spoon to scoop out the insides, saving the seeds for roasting or planting later.
  2. Create Feeding Slots: Use the knife to carve a few openings in the sides of the pumpkin. Make these slots large enough for birds to easily access the seeds but small enough to keep them secure. (Or alternatively, slice the whole pumpkin in half and use the bottom as a ‘pumpkin tray feeder').
  3. Fill with Seed: Pour a mix of birdseed into the pumpkin, filling it just above the feeding slots.
  4. Hang Your Feeder: Cut a length of twine and thread it through the top of the pumpkin. Tie it securely and find a suitable spot to hang your feeder, such as a tree branch or just place it on the ground.
  5. Enjoy the Show: Sit back and watch as various birds flock to your unique feeder. This DIY project not only provides food for the birds but also adds a seasonal touch to your garden.

Creating a pumpkin seed bird feeder is a wonderful way to engage with nature and support local wildlife. Happy birdwatching!
