Ecotherapy – A Greener Approach to Wellbeing

Ecotherapy is an interesting concept that explores the use of nature and being outside as a way to improve health. There are many forms of ecotherapy including Nature Walks and Wilderness Therapy, Forest Bathing (also known as Shinrin- yoku), Gardening and Horticultural Therapy, Animal-Assisted Therapy and Eco-Art Therapy to name a few. All of these forms promote mindfulness, relaxation and an engagement with the outside world.

Shinrin-yoku for example, is a concept originating in Japan where an individual immerses themselves in a forest. This practice can lower cortisol levels, reduce blood pressure and improve mood, and it’s as easy as placing yourself in a forest setting, taking in the sights and breathing in fresh air. It’s certainly worth a try.

Research in the subject has found that ecotherapy can help with the recovery process of grief, trauma and addiction, as well as numerous physical conditions. It can also support further mental health conditions such as depression. Considering it’s free and can lead to so many benefits, it is no wonder that some medical professionals are prescribing their patients to go out in nature as a form of treatment.

All in all, Ecotherapy offers a simple yet powerful way to improve both our mental and physical health by connecting with nature. Whether it's through forest bathing, nature walks, or gardening, spending time outdoors can lower stress, boost mood, and support recovery from various conditions. With its growing recognition in the medical community, it's clear that nature's healing touch can be just what we need in today's fast-paced world. So, the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, consider stepping outside – nature might just have the answers you’ve been looking for.
