Cockatoos - great companions

There are several different species of cockatoo, that belong to the family Cacatuidae.

They range in size from medium to large and stand out with their dramatic crest feathers, dusty feathers, and varying shades of white, pink, grey and black.

Pet Cockatoos are often referred to as “velcro” birds because of their highly sociable nature, they are comical and mischievous but can also be very demanding which requires an extremely dedicated owner who is willing to provide all the attention that is needed. Although these beautiful birds can be challenging pets they sometimes have to be left on their own, leaving the radio on can be a good idea as it keeps them occupied and happy as they tend to enjoy listening to music.

Most Cockatoos will learn to speak a few words and phrases and, while it may sound like they’re talking if you listen closely, it is more a babbling continuous and repetitive noise and at times they can be extremely loud especially when seeking attention.

Cockatoos require plenty of space to stretch and move around freely from perch to perch and to entertain themselves by, for example, playing with toys. So, when housing them, the bigger the cage the better.

As these are active birds, they should be allowed the opportunity, if possible and safe to do so, to exercise outside of their cage, for at least a few hours each day - it will also give them the chance to interact with people.

Food for cockatoos should be healthy and nutritious consisting of a large variety of fresh vegetables, fruit, and nuts, and as part of their diet, Haith's Parrot fruit & nut is a great assorted mixture and a fantastic supplementary treat that they will adore.

Cockatoos generally are very affectionate and easy to get on with and can make an exceptional companion.
