How Easy Is Your Feeder to Clean? Meet Our EasyClean Rating System

Feeding garden birds is one of life's simple pleasures. Watching birds return to your garden day after day is incredibly rewarding, especially knowing you're helping to support them through changing seasons. But alongside providing food comes an important responsibility: keeping bird feeders clean.

Good feeder hygiene isn’t just a “nice to have” - it’s essential for protecting the health of wild birds. With increasing awareness of bird disease and the possibility of new legislation on the horizon, there has never been a better time to take feeder cleanliness seriously.

The Challenge: Feeders That Are Hard to Clean

One of the biggest barriers to good feeder hygiene is the feeder itself. Many traditional feeders are awkward to dismantle, have hard-to-reach corners, or require tools to take apart. When cleaning feels like a chore, it’s easy for it to be delayed - and that’s when problems can start.

We know from speaking to customers that people want to do the right thing for birds, but they also want feeding to be simple, quick and practical. That’s why feeder design matters just as much as cleaning advice.

Introducing Our EasyClean Rating

Big Easy™ Metal Bird Seed Feeder - Haith's UK

Look out for this logo!

To make feeder hygiene clearer and more accessible, we’ve introduced our new EasyClean rating, scored from 1 to 10, with 10 being the easiest feeders to
take apart and clean thoroughly
.

This rating is now displayed as a clear logo across our feeder range, helping you make an informed choice at a glance. Whether you’re buying a new feeder or upgrading an existing one, the EasyClean rating takes the guesswork out of hygiene.

Our ratings consider factors such as:

  • How easily the feeder can be taken apart
  • Accessibility of all internal surfaces
  • Whether cleaning can be done without specialist tools

A higher EasyClean score means less effort for you - and a healthier feeding environment for birds.

Good Hygiene Still Starts With You

While an easy-to-clean feeder makes a big difference, it’s still important to follow good hygiene practices as part of your regular bird-feeding routine.

  • 1. Cleaning feeders at least once a week (more often in warm or wet weather)

  • 2. Using hot water and a bird-safe disinfectant

  • 3. Rinsing thoroughly and allowing feeders to dry before refilling

  • 4. Rotating feeding sites if possible and regularly cleaning bird tables and the ground beneath feeders

If you notice sick or lethargic birds in your garden, it’s best to temporarily stop
feeding and clean all feeders thoroughly before resuming.

Looking Ahead: Hygiene and Future Legislation

Across the bird-feeding industry, there is growing awareness of the role hygiene plays in wildlife health. With discussions around potential new legislation expected in the near future, responsible feeding practices are likely to become even more important.

By choosing feeders designed with cleaning in mind - and by maintaining good hygiene habits - you’re already one step ahead. Our EasyClean rating is part of our wider commitment to supporting responsible bird feeding and making it easier for everyone to do the right thing.

A Cleaner Feeder, A Healthier Garden
