Collection: House Sparrow Essentials

This is another species that has declined catastrophically in the last few years and is now completely missing from areas where it was once the most common species around.

Formerly, it exploited anywhere it could find spilled grain and was therefore commonly seen in large numbers around grain storage facilities and farm premises to an extent that it had become a pest. Changes in regulations, necessary to prevent pollution from bird droppings, now exclude all birds from access to this food source and House Sparrows coincidentally are missing from previous haunts. However, this cannot be the only reason for its decline as it has also enjoyed life close to human habitation in towns and large cities and the population there has suffered also.

Garden bird feeding is therefore important for this species, which readily accepts, not only small household scraps but also many of Haith's seed mixtures. Haith's Wild Bird Food, Premium Wild Bird Food (No Wheat) and Golden Chorus are all suitable as ground or bird table food and they will also take Peanuts from hanging feeders.
