Cockatoos are frequently fed sunflower seeds, peanuts, pine nuts, canary and millet seeds often with some groats and maize all mixed in various proportions to the particular bird-keeper's preferences. Some are given fruit and diced carrot and various nuts in their shells. The larger cockatoos also enjoy breaking open the tougher nuts such as Brazils. Cockatoos occasionally have highly selective feeding habits and have a tendency to take what they fancy, frequently rejecting beneficial items.

It can therefore be advantageous to offer a basic parrot mix such as Haith's Parrot Food that provides a good balanced diet and supplementing it with other items like Parrot Nature Diet and Parrot Fruit and Nut to give greater variety.
